Why Algae and Mold Build Up on Exterior Walls in Barbados

If you've noticed green, brown or black streaks spreading across exterior walls, you're seeing the visible result of Barbados' climate at work. Algae and mould don't appear because a property is dirty — they appear because the conditions suit them, and they'll keep returning unless those conditions are addressed.

What algae and mould need to grow

Both are simple organisms that need three things: moisture, a food source and a surface they can cling to. Barbados supplies all three for much of the year:

• Moisture: humidity, rainfall, condensation and overnight dew keep surfaces damp.
• Food: dust, pollen and organic debris settle on walls and feed growth.
• Shade: north-facing or shaded walls stay damp longer, which is where growth starts and spreads.

Why it matters for the surface

The growth isn't only cosmetic. Algae and mould hold moisture against the wall, which can darken staining, degrade paint and finishes, and in some cases affect the material beneath. Surfaces that stay clean and dry last longer and stay easier to maintain.

What doesn't work

Scrubbing with household cleaners or blasting with full pressure often makes things worse — it can mark paint, drive spores into the surface, or remove the growth only temporarily. The right approach treats the organism at the surface and rinses gently.

A better approach

Soft washing applies a compatible treatment to the affected surface, then rinses at low pressure. Combined with reducing nearby shade and debris where possible, and returning on a sensible schedule, this keeps growth under control without repeated high-pressure cleaning.
